[Infographic] BMS Components for EVs & Energy Storage Systems

    by Pulse Networking Team

Experts foresee a dramatic increase in demand for electric vehicles in the next several years.

Sales of electric vehicles are expected to surpass traditional internal combustion vehicles by the year 2038 or sooner. Some research suggests as early as 2028.

And, by 2025, electric vehicles will be cheaper than internal combustion vehicles.

That means designers and engineers need battery management systems designed for efficient battery capacity and increased battery lifetime.

This movement toward EVs, PHEVs, and HEVs, has directed the team at Pulse Electronics Networking BU to develop enhanced battery management system components.

The result? Take a look for yourself.

Here’s is a list of our battery management systems components to help you create sophisticated battery management and energy storage systems.

    How BMS Components Work

Large battery packs typically use a "daisy chain" structure, with many cells linked in sequence. These cells can differ dramatically in their voltage from one to the next.

These components need to be strictly isolated from each other to ensure safe operation.

In many modern BMS systems, serial communication links between circuit boards are isolated with transformer coupling circuits, rather than capacitor couplings.

Because of the high number of transformer coupling circuits used in most BMS applications, and the importance of their performance to the life of the battery and the BMS, these components need to be reliable.

    BMS Features and Benefits

The Pulse Electronics Networking BU team has designed several BMS transformers to use for EVs, PHEVS, and HEVs.

In addition to their durability, these components have several essential characteristics that distinguish them from competitors and predecessors:

    • Multiple options for working voltages and voltage isolation. Not all transformers are suited for all applications. Pulse offers a range of transformers for BMS, including HM2100NL, HM2101NL, HM2102NL, HM2103NL, HM2106NL, HM2112ZNL, and HM2113ZNL.
    • Meets AEC-Q200 requirements for automotive applications. The Automotive Electronics Council has put several industry standards in place to assure the reliability of electronic components used in vehicles. Our products meet AEC-Q200 standards. Our components are designed for durability, as well as their ability to resist thermal shocks and high temperature and humidity.
    • Operating temperatures from -40 C to 125 C. The temperature of a circuit can vary considerably. Pulse Electronics' BMS transformers operate efficiently in a wide range of temperatures, to assure the battery's reliability and safety in a variety of conditions.
